The Story Behind Commission Row

The Indianapolis Wholesale District has a rich history that helped establish Indianapolis as a national crossroads of trade. This evolution, which began in 1863, took Indianapolis from a small town to a large city and opened trade channels with buyers and sellers across the nation. During that time, South Delaware Street became known as “Commission Row”, a place where farmers could sell their goods through resellers that would charge a “commission” for the service. Transportation and Commerce created a hub of activity during this time period. This area thrived until The Great Depression when it quickly became an area devastated by the economics of the time. With decades of development, the Wholesale District has become more of a “Social District” where sports, arts, dining, and entertainment all are intertwined
